Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Exceptional Talent in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had let in 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or had there never been any cohesion maintaining its structure from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him to later acknowledge that the board had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Reports that he might quit were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio became as messy in their performances as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their first five games, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to tell if they're getting better or imploding.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Comeback

At least one man kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He spent the last one with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were attempting to extend his stay for another season. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived initially during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Finding His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to identify the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
