Several Affected as In-Flight Disturbance Impacts A Delta Airlines Flight Arriving in Sydney, Australia

A number of individuals sustained injuries after a Delta flight traveling from Los Angeles to Sydney was hit by turbulence Friday morning.

The flight, numbered 41 "encountered brief turbulence" as it touched down at the Sydney airport, a representative for the carrier told. Four flight attendants required medical attention.

Emergency medical services said they treated five individuals, and transferred a trio to a medical facility with minor injuries that comprised back pain and migraines. Those affected ranged from their 30s up to the 70s.

It is the newest example of commercial jets being hit by severe turbulence, with aviation specialists saying that shifting climate patterns is a key driver.

There were 245 passengers and a crew of 15 on the wide-body jet, the representative said, stating that the plane arrived "safely and normally" at the airport at 06:48 local time on Friday morning.

Paramedics said they were alerted just only 180 seconds prior to the plane landed, and ambulances were waiting on the tarmac.

The reasons turbulence is getting increasingly prevalent - and often stronger.

In the previous year, 25 people sustained injuries when a Delta Airlines flight, travelling from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, hit "considerable" turbulence just 120 minutes into the transoceanic journey, and had to make an unscheduled landing.

In 2024, those on board on a certain international flight endured a terrifying short but intense bout of severe turbulence. A traveler died and many were hurt, as individuals not fastened in rose out of their seats and were slammed back.

Turbulence is a common occurrence on aircraft journeys, and while instances of significant turbulence seem to be rising, they are still very rare.

Data suggests that there are around thousands of instances of severe or worse turbulence each year, out of a sum of over 35 million journeys that now take off worldwide.

Severe turbulence is defined as when the up and down movements of a jet experiencing unstable air generate in excess of a significant G-force on your body - sufficient force to lift you out of your seat if you weren't wearing a restraint.

As global warming alters the conditions in the sky, researchers alert that flying could become more turbulent: warming trends and shifting wind patterns in the higher altitudes are expected to heighten the regularity and severity of dangerous in-flight bumps.
